Blue
Orca is a proposal prepared for a charter company interested in a
boat for whale watching in the Queen Charlotte Islands. She is a
70 foot motorsailer of somewhat unique styling so that she would
stand out and be easily identified by the average consumer. The
large viewing ports in the main lounge will allow unobstructed
observation in all types of weather while remaining warm and
comfortable.
I have
put a crew cabin in the bow for a husband and wife team (captain
and cook/hostess). They have a small desk for ship's papers and
their own w.c. with shower. I have put another crew cabin amidship
off the engine room for a marine biologist or other type of
specialist. Here I have also included a desk for planning course
material, etc. The passenger cabins have upper and lower berths
but in the aft four cabins I have given the option of having the
lower berths pull out to form a double. Each cabin has plenty of
storage for personal effects. All w.c.s have a toilet, sink, and
shower. The galley is equipped with a large fridge/freezer with
microwave above, stove with oven, and dishwasher built into the
pantry, accessed from the galley side. The pantry has full height
cabinets for food stowage. The main cabin lounge will seat 12 in
comfort, with viewing areas outboard of the settees for people who
want to stand at the windows and watch the world go by. There are
hanging lockers at the doors to the side decks for coats and wet
gear, and a bar forward which is open to the galley below for pass
through serving. The helm has a navigation table which will take
full size charts and all electrical panels will be immediately
available to starboard. A hydraulically powered winch mounted just
off centerline will handle all sheets through sheet stoppers. All
sails are roller furling for ease of handling. The side decks are
wide for easy access, there is a sun pad for laying on the fore
deck, and a large aft deck for lounge chairs, etc. There is a
stairway aft to the swim grid, with access to the lazarrette from
the swim grid with storage room for lots of water toys.
The
hull has a six foot draft for some of the shallower waters of the
northwest and is a must if you plan on using this boat in the
Caribbean. I have used twin keels and twin rudders for good sail
performance and a hull form which will allow 18 knots speed with
500 s.h.p. using a single diesel with variable pitch prop. This
data has been verified through a model test program.
Blue
Orca represents a concept which can be modified in length, width,
and layout to suit the owners requirements. The possible
variations are endless. If you are intrigued by this type of
vessel, give me your requirements and I will prepare a sketch to
suit your needs.
